Motion graphics and animation are employed in my practice to produce procedural, rule-based and interactive works which foreground temporal patterns which are experienced durationally. Most work unfold slowly to reveal the patterns and harmonic structure which reflect the underlying rules. This practice can be understood as a form of expanded animation, an idea which draws from ‘expanded cinema’ as something which extends beyond the screen, as this work will often form part of a larger installation or assemblage. This work also draws from ‘expanded painting’ as it is not only the production of time-based material but a discursive, visual and social field, which is constantly being negotiated by its actors and effected by its institutional environment.
